The Recovery Process for Ozzy Osbourne’s Sobriety and Jack Osbourne’s Sobriety

The Osbourne’s have been on the fringes of the spotlight for a long time.
Ozzy’s rock star days saw him catapulted into stardom, and the family rose to prominent positions in the reality entertainment industry, where it was almost impossible to think of Ozzy sober, and even less likely to imagine Ozzy Osbourne’s sobriety lasting long term.
However, life in the spotlight is rarely as lovely as it looks.
Even reality TV cleans up a lot of the “reality” that happens.
Ozzy’s family seemed semi-functional through the camera lens, but there was a deep-seated problem brewing within the Osbourne’s lifestyle – alcoholism.
Green Facts mentions that over 76 million people worldwide suffer from alcohol use problems.
Many of these people struggle with overcoming their addiction, but they don’t have the added pressure of TV cameras on them.
Ozzy was no stranger to being in and out of rehab.

Jack notes that his father was typically gone for long stretches through his musical career, either on tour or recovering from one addiction or another.
Jack himself spiraled into alcohol use as a result of trying to escape from his life.
Yet, today, both Jack and Ozzy have overcome this damaging substance dependence. Read on to find out more about Ozzy’s drug addiction and how the Osbourne’s journey led to sobriety.
The Genetic Marvel and Why it Was a Difficult Process Toward Ozzy Osbourne’s Sobriety
In the early days of genome research, scientists reached out to Ozzy Osbourne because of his resiliency.
Ozzy has had a long history of drug and alcohol dependency, finding himself in and out of rehab quite often. Many from a certain generation recall a particularly vivid scene from his rock and roll days, when Ozzy bit the head off a live bat.
This is hardly behavior synonymous with sobriety. And things only went downhill for Ozzy and his cocaine and drug use.
During his stint in reality TV, reports had him taking up to twenty-five Vicodin pills a day. Yet despite all of these vices and addictions, Ozzy’s still alive years later.
Scientists were convinced it had something to do with his genetic makeup and so decided to sequence his genome for the good of science.
The results were astonishing. The 2010 sequencing of Ozzy’s genome discovered mutations in certain places that allowed his body to metabolize alcohol at a faster rate than the average human.
He was also six times more likely than the average human to experience alcohol dependency or cravings. Additionally, he was about 1.3 times more likely to become a cocaine addict.
While the gene sequencing was insightful into how someone like Ozzy could survive all those years of drug and alcohol abuse, it casts his son’s own struggle with alcoholism in a different light.
Jack Osbourne’s Personal Demons

Jack started abusing alcohol when he was a teenager.
Growing up in a household where his dad was always addicted to something meant that the environment played a significant part in his spiral into alcoholism. Not seeing Ozzy Osbourne’s sobriety really hurt their father and son relationship.
However, in addition to his background, his father’s genes seemed to pass on to him. Jack too found himself sinking into the depths of a bottle as a way to cope with the world around him.

Yet, even though he was having this problem, he was more concerned with the impression it made on others. Jack Osbourne was used to the glamorous side of substance abuse, but he also had to deal with a darker, more personal side of the problem.
The alcohol eventually threw Jack into a deep depression that was exacerbated by his mother’s cancer diagnosis.
Addiction and the Osbourne Family
Sharon herself never even considered alcoholism a problem. In her own words, she just thought it was natural for people who liked to drink. Yet, she eventually referred Ozzy to the Betty Ford Clinic, where he would clean up his act.
Jack’s balancing act saw him dipping into alcohol when his life wasn’t so great and pulling back when it seemed to do better. A friend of Sharon’s eventually called her and told her that things had gotten bad, and Jack’s behavior was an excellent testament to that warning.
During one of the seasons, Jack disappeared to the Osbourne’s beach house for an entire weekend and lost himself at the bottom of a bottle.
The thought of entering rehab had always been at the back of his mind, but filming for the reality show meant that if he decided to take the plunge, everyone watching would know that he was going to rehab. The shame and stigma associated with it were too much, mostly since he was a mere 17 years old at the time.
The Power of Rehabilitation

Ozzy himself has gone through several rounds of rehab to get out of whatever addiction he found himself in. The former metal rocker has been addicted to several different substances throughout the years, yet still managed to free himself from their grip.
Why would the Grandfather of Black Metal consider cleaning up his act? From Ozzy’s perspective, his biggest failure was the fact that he wasn’t there for his kids.
The ex-rocker remembers getting into an argument with Jack and asking him what he wanted after outlining all the things he’d provided his kids with. Jack’s gut-punch of an answer was that he’d like a father for once.
That moment was a turning point in Ozzy’s life, and he decided to clean up his act for good. Thanks to his dedication, Ozzy was able to step out of the shadow of the things that haunted him. This led Ozzy to realize he was ready to start the road to recovery that would lead to Ozzy Osbourne’s sobriety.

He turned his life by attending treatment centers to be around enough to re-establish a relationship with his son.
Jack has also faced his own struggles with alcoholism and managed to triumph.
He notes that even though he was hooked on alcohol at a young age, it was an inevitable occurrence. Based on Jack’s situation and his father’s history of addiction, it is likely that he would have ended up having to deal with addiction sooner or later.
Luckily, he faced this trouble early in life and overcame it. Now, nearly two decades sober, Jack can look back on that chapter of his life and remember what drove him to that dark place and how he got himself out of it.
Healing a Family After Ozzy Osbourne’s Recovery & Sobriety

The Osbourne family has become much closer as a result of their rehab treatment.
Ozzy and Jack have bonded, and without substances getting in the way, they are free to express their opinions with each other and find common ground. Ozzy’s history of addiction has impacted Jack significantly, but it’s never too late to rebuild those bridges. Ozzy is making an attempt, and Jack seems to be helping him because he’s understood firsthand what addiction can be like.
It’s only by experiencing it yourself that you realize what substance abuse can make you do or say. These expressions can lead to the collapse of family relationships and the destruction of other significant relationships.
Jack’s sobriety has also led him to start forming bonds with his own children with ex-wife Lisa Stelly.
Jack has three children whom he’d like to be an example for. He wants to make sure that they don’t see their dad the same way he grew up experiencing Ozzy’s constant battle with addiction.
Jack is grateful that his addiction is at an end, but it’s not a battle that is easy. Every single day is a struggle to stay sober, but one he does for the benefit of his family.
Sharon is also very grateful for both her husband and her son recovering from their addictions.
Free Insurance Verification for Substance Abuse Treatment
For the first time, she can look forward to family gatherings without Ozzy saying something to rile Jack up, and Jack taking the bait leading to a massive row.
Ozzy might be late to the party as a father, but he’s there for his son now that he needs the support.
What better way to come to grips with addiction than hearing stories from a father who’s fought the battle himself and led himself to a sober lifestyle.
